Malayalam Comedy Movies of All Time
I have arranged the below list according to the decreasing order of popularity. The first one is the very best. You may feel like some films below should be ranked higher than the top one but the list below is ranked by random people and according to my personal opinion.
Kalyanaraman (2002)
The film begins with a Ramankutty (Dileep) 78-year-old telling his story to his grandchildren in a flashback. He belonged to a family that were wedding planners planning all that goes into a wedding like erecting pandals, decorating the house, arranging musicians, generator, cars and even catering for the wedding party! At the Ambadi Thampi during such a wedding? The house in which Ramankutty is responsible for all the departments is cancelled in the last minute. The explanation was that, as the bride was dumb, the groom declined to tie the knot…..
Punjabi House (1998)
Punjabi House is considered as an evergreen malayalam comedy movie which is unbeaten till now. Unni (Dileep) has a lot of debts and no way to pay them back. He wants to commit suicide so his parents can use the insurance money to repay the debts, but a fisherman named Gangadharan (Cochin Haneefa) and his worker Ramanan (Harisree Ashokan) are saving him. Once they witness the drowning of Unni, Unni pretends to be deaf and mute in order to falsify his death and the money from insurance reaches his parents. Nevertheless, Gangadharan has his own debt to a group of money lenders from Punjabi who settled in Kerala. He is forced to make Unni and Ramanan to work at their home until he can repay it. A series of interesting events unfold after Unni encounters the house’s deaf and mute Pooja (Mohini).
Pulival Kalyanam (2003)
The story is about Jayasurya, who is adopted as his brother by Lal as a child. Lal and family run a fireworks company and Jayasurya went to borrow money to expand this business. His cell phone is exchanged in a bank with Kavya Madhavan, who is a wealthy businessman’s daughter (Lalu Alex). After many comic scenes, they both begin to get the calls of each other and begin to fall in love. It’s just the interval by then. So some problems are introduced and the story is how they are solved.
Ee Parakkum Thalika (2001)
Unnikrishnan owns an old bus, obtained as compensation for the road accident of his father, and he faces a lot of repercussions because of the bus’s miserable condition. The story changed when a woman named Basanthi came in as a nomad in the bus.
CID Moosa (2003)
Dileep plays the son of a police constable (Oduvil Unnikrishnan) Mulamkuziyil Sahadevan, whose dream is to become a police officer like his father. Yet his brother-in-law Peethambaran (Jagathy Sreekumar) does not like the idea and sees that his physical examination is not obvious to Sahadevan. Yet Sahadevan is persuaded by one of his uncle to become a private detective and rechristen him as CID Moosa! CID Moosa is considered as the best malayalam comedy movie by some people.
Thilakkam (2003)
Padmanabhan Master (Nedumudi Venu) and his wife (K.P.A.C Lalitha) are waiting for Unni, their only child who has long been missing. At a temple festival where he was with his neighbor Panikkar (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), young 10-year-old Unni lost in the crowd. Panikkar also didn’t come back because he only decided to get back after Unni was found. Ammu (Kavya Madhavan) is the daughter of Panikkar who also believes that her father will return with Unni one day as a master and his wife.
Pandipada (2005)
The movie is all about the troubles of a Bhuvan (Dileep) small-time real estate dealer. He’s lurching from trouble to trouble. And when he buys a property in neighboring Tamil Nadu, he gets into a large soup. His fond hope of selling it off quickly runs a floor as it is a contested estate and it is being fought for by two big wigs Karuppusamy(Rajan. P Dev) and Pandi Dorai (Prakash Raj).
Bhuvan and his wife Bhasi (Ashokan) succeed in infiltrating into the household of Pandi Durai and gaining their trust. But the twist is that Bhuvan is loved by Karuppusamy’s daughter Meena (Navya Nair).
In Harihar Nagar (1990)
Here you will be introduced to four friends-Mahadevan (Mukesh), Govindan Kutty (Siddique), Appukuttan (Jagadish) and Thomas Kutty (Ashokan) who seem to have no other job than to pursue a girl who has just arrived in their neighborhood. It’s shown nowhere in the film what they’re doing for a living, if they’re looking for jobs or if they’re doing anything else.
Vettam (2004)
Gopi, a small thief, steals a chain and drops it in Veena’s bag to avoid a police inspector. He tries to take it out of her later, but there is no longer the string. He is part of her plan to prevent her boyfriend from getting married to the daughter of a wealthy tycoon.
